Who was Doubting Thomas?

In the Bible, the Gospel of John shares the story in John 20:24-29 (NIV Translation)

Now Thomas (also known as Didymus) one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!”

But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”

A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, Peace be with you!”

Then he said to Thomas,“Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”

Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”

Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

Thomas was famous for having doubted the Resurrection of Jesus and for demanding physical proof of the wounds of Christ’s Crucifixion. The phrase “doubting Thomas” was coined for his lack of faith. When Jesus showed him the wounds Thomas became the first person to explicitly acknowledge the divinity of Jesus.

Why did Jesus choose to show himself to Thomas?

Jesus had to have known Thomas would question the validity of ‘who’ this man claimed to be.  Jesus went so far as to invite Thomas to touch his wounds and see for himself. Jesus understands our battles with doubt and invites us to come near and believe. Today, millions of people stubbornly want to witness miracles or see Jesus in person before they will believe in him, but God asks us to come to him in faith.

When you visit the Cross America Community Center in person you can see the life-size statue of Thomas pointing to Jesus and putting his hand on the scars in Jesus’s hands.  It’s a beautiful, one-of-a-kind bronze statue.
