Loretta L. Hunsinger Haas age 89, of Lafayette and formerly of Wingate, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by family, 6:10 PM Thursday, October 27, 2022. Loretta was born in Howard County, on November 25, 1932, the daughter of the late Rev. Homer and Florence Shrock Hunsinger. Her father, Rev. Hunsinger was appointed minister of the Pleasant Hill Church in Wingate in 1945. She married Alton Guy Jr. Haas on October 22, 1950, in Seymour, IN, he preceded her in death on December 22, 2007.

Loretta was a 1950 graduate of Wingate High School. She was a stay-at-home mother/homemaker until her children were in school. She worked in the kitchen of Coal Creek Central School from 1968-1983. She was a member of and accepted Christ in 1946 at Pleasant Hill Church, where she was an active member, until moving to Lafayette. She played the piano and organ at church and was active in the Ladies Guild. For 20 years she and the Ladies Guild visited Hickory Creek Nursing Home where they ministered to the residents. She was the ‘flower chairman’ for the Wingate community, ensuring flowers were ordered for funerals.

Loretta was a lady of grace and kindness and made everyone she met feel special. She had her own ‘card ministry’, letting people know they were in her thoughts and prayers. Loretta enjoyed sports, reading, and her church. She looked forward to and attended (even if she wasn’t feeling well) her grandchildren’s sporting and school activities. Surviving are three children: a son; Rick (Becky) Haas of Crawfordsville, two daughters; Rachel Haas of Lafayette and Robin (Jeroen) Honingh of Arcadia. Five Grandchildren, 12 Great-grandchildren, and a sister-in-law Rosalie Hunsinger of Lebanon also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Jr. a brother Mickey Hunsinger, and sister Janet Kemp. Visitation hours are 1:30 – 3:30 PM with funeral services following at 3:30 PM on Sunday, November 6, 2022, with Pastor Duane Mycroft officiating at Family and Friends Funeral Home of Wingate. Alton Guy “Jr.” Haas, 76, Wingate, died Saturday in his home following a short illness. He was an active 62-year member of Pleasant Hill Church, Wingate, serving as treasurer for 30 years. For 15 years he served as treasurer of the Spartan Group, which owns the Spartan Inn of Wingate. He served 40 years as secretary-treasurer of Greenlawn Cemetery, Wingate. He served as an officiant at many funeral services over the years and was involved in Souls for Christ and Gideon International.

He was born March 6, 1931, in Fountain County, to Alton W. and Elizabeth Minick Haas. He graduated from Wingate High School in 1949. He was a lifelong Wingate resident. He married Loretta Lou Hunsinger on Oct. 22, 1950, in Seymour. She survives. Also surviving are sons Rick J. (Becky) Haas, Crawfordsville; daughters Rachel Luann Haas, Lafayette, and Robin Guyann Haas, Wingate; step-sisters Pat (Harold) Oswalt, Wingate, and Reva (Bob) Myers, Robinson, Ill.; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents; twin sister Alta “Jean” Essick; sister Deloris Davis; and brother Darrell.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday at Family & Friends Funeral Home, Wingate, with the Rev. Joe Perry officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Wingate. Friends may call 3-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
